    With regard to the flash sequences that have been seen from LES-8 since
    early 2005, note that

    "LES-8 was retired on 2 June 2004 after 28 years of service."
    
    I.e., it seems somewhat plausible that it did lose attitude control not
    many months before the flashes started to be seen.
