The New York Times article on 17 Nov said "1,000 or more miles east of
Australia."

The "east" part puzzles me a little, as there's a fair amount of inhabited
land there.  The Indian Ocean west of Australia or the eastern South Pacific
would seem better, but maybe there's some orbital constraint that keeps them
from using those areas.
