Thanks to the very accurate predictions of Heavens-above (thanks again, Chris), I was able to see the Soyuz TM-31 fly over NW to SE at 18:06, with the peak at 18:09, with a mag of about +3 to +4. I think I saw it just before Ed did in Austin. Then at 18:12, I saw Mir go SE (starting in Sagittarius, close to the Moon) to NW very slowly and graciously with a very bright magnitude of about -1. I did these sightings near a beach just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, with few man-made lights to block out the stars. I finished the hour at 18:46 -18: 51, a little further north (pulled off the freeway), with the view of ISS coming NW to SE, going very slowly just over the Moon, and changing magnitude from +4 to about +1 as it got near the Moon, and then it's brightness receded as it flew over San Francisco. The street lights were much more visible here, but I could still see the major stars and the Moon. I couldn't help but think of how miraculous it was to see past, present, and future space domiciles for us humans passing over us in such a short period of time (less than an hour)--and how 3 brave representatives (of us) are up there now, going to the next frontier, a pioneering adventure of the new century ... definitely a trick and a treat!
