For those still interested in that old orbiting grapefruit, here's
something I found on SpaceBase-Nasa-News:
SB-NASA_NEWS 22-3-98 From: Dan Dubrick Subj: 3\20 VANGUARD 1 40TH
ANNIVERSARY
20 Mar 1998: Vanguard 1 40th Anniversary
On March 17, 1958, 40 years ago on Tuesday, Vanguard 1 was launched
into Orbit as part of the International Geophysical Year. Vanguard 1
went into an initial orbit apogee of 2465 miles and a perigee of 406
miles. It is still in orbit, having made more than 158,183 orbits at a
velocity of 12,976 miles/hour. There is an interesting and useful World
Wide Web site dedicated to Vanguard 1 located at URL:
http://home5.swipnet.se/~w-52936/index20.htm
In addition, the NASA history of Vanguard is available on-line at URL:
