The synonymy for "common" in Webster's New World Dictionary (highly
recommended!) suggests that "vulgar" is nearly ideal for this usage. I
use "vulgar name" in hopes of replacing the previous, misleading usage
"common name", because as a newbie I spent way too much time struggling,
thinking that "common names" were usable. I hope that current newbies
will be forwarned by "vulgar name" not to expect too much from "vulgar
names". There must have been dozens of messages posted to SeeSat-L
expressing various degrees of inconvenience, lost data, and general
unhappiness about the sad state of vulgar names.

Also hopefully, all the more civil people will do so, and it will grow
stronger, not weaker.

I don't have the details either, but I think there is a FAQ floating
around news.answers or somewhere with much detail.
Cheers.

For example, trigonometry is the part used to describe things which turn.
