Thanks to everyone who replied to this query. I think I have finally resolved it. While waiting for my computer to start this evening so I could check the time for the Progress-M 06M and ISS flyby, I was looking at the sky to the NW (21:02UT) and to my surprise there was not just one but *two* bright objects similar in nature (but redder in colour) to the unknown I saw previously. This time I managed to get binoculars on them and ID'ed them as chinese lanterns! So, a very mundane explanation for an otherwise extraordinary sighting last week!
