That has been ruled out. In the following post I showed that the incomplete de-orbit burn hypothesis was mathematically
impossible because even if the spacecraft could have survived to re-enter ~10 h later over the U.S., it would have
passed 10 min. earlier than the fireball occurred. The same would apply to any component of the spacecraft that had
undergone the de-orbit burn.
