There have also been a few U.S. Navy SLBM launches off of the California coast. About 18 months to two years ago, there was mid-day launch southwest of San Diego. The event was seen and heard in the San Diego area. About 25 years ago, a submarine off of California's central coast launched an SLBM at dusk on a Saturday. The launch happened as numerous amateur astronomers were having an observing session as part of the Riverside Telescope Maker's Conference some 300 miles to the southeast. Needless to say, they enjoyed the display. Like Jonathan, I too have noticed that information about U.S. Navy SLBM launches is hard to find.
