Phil Clark sent me the following
Three post-recovery pieces of debris are now catalogued from Foton-M3. I am assuming that C is
the heavy battery module (~500-750 kg), while D and E with the high apogees are what I refer to as
the retro-rocket covers, which separated (are blown?!!!) into such orbits at the time of the
solid-propellant retrorocket firing.
Such pieces of debris are standard for the recovery of Vostok-class spacecraft - although for
photoreconnaissance satellites the battery module would be replaced by the in-orbit manoeuvring
motor, to which were attached a pair of solar panels.
