Oops! Never mind! I had a major misunderstanding: I assumed the solar panels faced the sun, but now I suspect these calculations assume the panels face the earth (along with the communications antenna). This means that being on the sun-sat line isn't ideal but instead you want to get an "angle shot". Now it all makes sense to me.
