Hi Everyone,
I got some decent observations last night of both Cosmos 2282
(23168 / 94-034A) & Gorizont 14 (17969 / 87-040A) despite broken thin high
altitude cloud.
Using my 6" newtonian I timed Cosmos 2282 flash period at 20.78s (51
periods, ending at 04:14UT, 11-Sep-02; sorry I haven't had time to reduce
these measurements into PPAS format....). The flash maxima were relatively
sharp & varied in brightness, sometimes as bright as mag+4 but generally mag
+7.
Both Gorizont 14 & 24, two known geoflashers, were above the horizon so I
decided to check if either of these objects were flashing. Gorizont 24, low
to the west was invisible when I looked at 04:50 UT, 11 Sept 2002. However,
Gorizont 14 was flashing as bright as mag +4, although again the flash bright
varied considerably sometimes being as faint as mag+8. I timed 14 periods
giving a flash period of 87.875s (ending at 05:13UT). Gorizont 14 is
currently well placed for observations from the U.S. & is potentially an easy
binocular object.
Best wishes and clear skies,
Jason Hatton
