    Christian,
You will find altitude vs density plots in King-Hele's book observing
    Eath satellites.
Yes there is an overall increase in atmospheric density at heights
we are concerned with due to the extra ultraviolet radiation produced
during solar maximum. The exosphere is hotter and hence denser. The
height of transition bewtween a mainly helium composition and a
hydrogen also changes , further complicating things, as this changes
    the scale height.

Geomagnetic storm heating is produced by the extra electric currents
in the auroral zone during the active phase of a goemagnetic storm.
Its ordinary resistive heating like ones electric radiator.
