There was a dual Minuteman III launch from Vandenberg AFB early on the morning of September 28th. Jay, one of my coworkers, stayed up late and observed the first launch at 01:04 PDT (08:04 UTC). He was in Camarillo, California about 95 miles east-southeast of Vandenberg. The sky was clear, but very murky and only the three brightest stars were visible. In spite of this, Jay saw the Minuteman III rise over a neighbor's roof and said that it was bright. He then began observing it through binoculars and saw staging. Jay counted 31 flashes from the jettisoned first stage which was still burning and tumbling. He didn't stay up for the second launch, which took place about an hour later. A .wav file of a news story about these launches is posted at http://home.earthlink.net/~kd6nrp. Go to the File Library and click on Dual_Launch.wav.
