any suggestions ?

I too have made many field trips to see the Iridium flares, armed with
topo maps, etc. and the two times I dragged my family or friends along:
no flare. Every other time: amazing flare (one lasted ten seconds)

Since then, (to avoid major embarrasment such as you describe) I simply
wait for one predicted within 2 km of my house, and casually mention
"I'm going out to look at a flare, wanna come?" and sometimes they run
right out, sometimes not.

The one time I woke up two teenage boys at 5:30 AM and brought them out
into the backyard to see a flare, I was sweating little bullets until
the thing finally came. Whew!

If your folks think you're crazy just because the sat didn't show, they
probably thought you were crazy already anyway...

My advice: Blame the goverment for faulty shooting star predictions,
kind of like a weather report, nobody believes them anyway!
