Dear SeeSatters,

I'm a new subscriber since spring 1996. I work in the Satellite 
Image Centre (Finland), which sees to distribution and processing 
of remote sensing data, handles technical advice for the users of 
satellite images, etc. The centre also handles international 
relations concerning satellite images. Some our interests:

1) To know what's going on in the remote sensing satellite field 
(IRS, ADEOS, etc.).

2) Sometimes our customers want to know beforehand the days or 
exact times, when certain satellite instruments take images of their 
area of interest. So, I'm interested in how the softwares for viewing 
satellites from earth are usable for predicting the opposite 
approach: viewing a point (or area!) on earth from satellites.

There are some softwares for making the satellite image 
programming orders, like DESCW (see e.g. 
http://gds.esrin.esa.it/Cserver). These do not cover all satellites 
and instruments, and I'd like to have also a more general one. 

I have tried SatSpy. First I'd better filter the Minimum elevation 
angle (here named 'a') to a satellite so that I'll yet be seen on the 
image edge. Flat earth, nadir imaging case is easy, but curved 
case I have thought just a bit with B. Gimle, who uses SkyMap by 
Rob Matson, and Quicksat by Mike McCants, and they also accept 
a minimum value and skip all other predictions. B.G. also uses 
TrakStar by TS Kelso.

Points:
S = satellite;  E = Earth's centre;  
T = target on earth surface, satellite image edge
Z = above earth target so that EZS = 90 degrees
Other angles:
ZTS = 90-a;   ETS = 90+a;    TES = v
TSE = 90-a-v = camera angle off-vertical for point T
Distances:
TE = R = Earth radius;   TS = d = satellite range
ZS = d cos a;   ZT = d sin a
ES = R + H, where H = satellite elevation (height)
v = atan ( sin a / ( R/d + cos a ) )
( R + d sin a )^2  + ( d cos a )^2 = ( R + H )^2
R = e.g. 6370997 m

I have a small GIF image about this attached.
So the curved earth case 'a' is yet to be solved. We'll
think of this some more..

Version 2.0 will have some improvements. Now I place a ground 
observer at the center of the area and run the Sat Views_Skytrace 
for up to 7200 min (5 d). Not bad, but I'm waiting forward to 
hear other recommendations and tips. Tilted 
image cases are yet more complicated.. By the way, Ms. 
Soile.Kankkunen@nls.fi is making a software on finding the TM, 
SPOT & IRS PAN track & frame indexes hitting some area of 
interest.

3) So, we help on technical matters of satellite images. Customers 
and press also ask us general questions about satellites. Some 
answers I have found from the list, some not so clear. Please 
fill the gaps.

* How many satellites are out there? About 3500, but as many debris
objects. How many satellites are operational?
* What happens to them later? A couple particles per week decay, 
burning in the atmosphere. Seldom do they hit the ground. Some use 
the final fuel to achieve a higher orbit and to decay after a few 
decades, but are unlikely to be catched then either.
* Satellite names may vary a bit in the TLE's. Where to get the "true"
NORAD number and name correspondence?
* Is it tight out there? Mainly at the geostationary orbit. Nearer, the 
first collision of operational satellite has just happened this year
(see http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/EE/CSER/UOSAT/).
* One special question is about locationing implant chips from 
satellites. Mr. P. E. Salminen in one newspaper asks people to find 
out if things like that are technically possible at all, before they 
warn others. I found http://www.newciv.org/~albert/tech/implant and 
http://www.netti.fi/~makako/mind/. May sound like X-Files to many, 
but Dr. Sanders may have told real things as well. Nah, we do not 
have the money to redo the work of Sanders >100 persons group, and 
I don't not know much about neural medicine, but you 
might confirm something about the satellite things..

According to Alan Yu's story (latter URL), Sanders has told in the
"Monetary Economic Review" that "There are new satellites going up (such
as the) 66 satellites that Motorola is putting up in conjunction with the
Russians. These are low-orbiting satellites." He explains that certain
microchips can be picked up by satellite. "We used this with military
personnel in the Iraq war where they were actually tracked using this
particular type of device."

Mentioned also in an article in Finnish Ristiretki - Via Dolorosa 2/
1996 magazine: "(Only pieces from a 3-hour speech..) People that have 
an implant chip can be located onto the screen. The group sent 23 
satellites, and using them the locationing was possible every 19 
minutes. This was not enough, so they were replaced by 66 new 
ones, covering the whole world. It was tested that cows and 
dolphines can also be located. On various parts of the world some 
strange flashes like blowouts were seen on the sky, and some people 
wondered what caused them. The 23 had to be blown away to 
make room for the more effective 66 new ones, by using laser of Star 
Wars project, where Sanders worked at the time of President Reagan."

So,
* Do you know these satellites? If they satellites appear on some list 
of odd satellites, would elset sorting group them e.g. according to same 
height or inclination?
* Can all satellites be seen? What if they are matt black or stealth 
type?
* Could there really have been the need to "make room" for the 
new 66 (using perhaps some same orbits), or just to test the 
laser?
* These are not quite what we mean by "flasher satellites", but can 
anybody confirm the mentioned flashes?
* Could the GPS technique fit to chips so small? How to implement the 
feedback from the chip? Some chips operated away from 
the test persons could perhaps be analysed? Which frequency 
of signals the satellites might send to effect the mind? Can it be
recorded? I do not know if these techniques would be possible, but 
it can yet be.

The CIA subscribers might also contribute about the 66 out 
there and give their TLEs? Kidding... but just kidding? At least 
someone could mention, what has been published to all by now.
About the first implant chip applications the spinal bypass woman 
case has been reported in Reader's Digest, but when, and what 
else has come out?

4) I have collected a list (part of HTML here) of satellite related software
