Meeus' work is the touchstone, the definitive book.

But a somewhat easier place to start is Practical Astronomy with your
Computer or Practical Astronomy with you Pocket Calculator (Both by, if
memory serves me, Peter Duffett-Smith). The algorithms presented are based
on Meeus' earlier work.

I found the calculator version easier to work with, as I was coding in C
and the only edition of the Computer book I could find was an old one, and
presented its algorithms in Apple II BASIC. The step by step working
through of the problem presented in the Calculator book seemed to be easier
to translate cleanly.

The only problem I had with Astronomical Algorithms is that the C code
available with the book was not totally portable, and I had to make some
changes before I could get it to link properly on my Macintosh.
