On the pictures in the Spaceflight101 article you see that the 58 cm sphere has a half black/half shining apperance. When orientatrd favorable it must be visible in bino's and certainly with a tracking telescope. I remember from years back I've seen trash canisters much smaller jettisoned from the MIR station. They were about mag 7-8 and visible in a rather small bino.
