Just look at the Shuttle orbit. It follows that path until it is about 2,000
mi from landing then banks 100 mi or so left and/or right to bleed off
energy. You can tell from the path which way it will make its main turns.
Over Seattle it is always still on the basic orbital track because dynamic
pressure has not yet reached a point to use the control surfaces..
All the old landing ground tracks are available online. It is easy to match
one up with the current potential landing parameters and get a very close
idea of the upcoming ground track, but anyway they post it a day or two in
advance so the effort is no longer needed. I used to get them from a fellow
at NASA before they had a internet site.
