"The plan is to dispatch one additional refueling rocket to Mir in January,
giving it enough fuel to remain in orbit until the end of February. Then, on
Feb. 27 or 28, the agency would send the ship into a controlled dive that
would - if all goes well - end in the Pacific 1,000 miles or more east of
    Australia."

I'm a bit confused (my normal state) about the "east of Australia" bit. Why
not to the west of OZ, where there seems to be less occupied land?

In any event, this should provide some interesting observation
    opportunities.
