It looks as if Russia really wants to keep Mir in orbit an extra year.
A fairly brief Reuters story reports:

> Wednesday November 18 12:47 PM ET
>
> Mir Station Likely To Fly Extra Year To Mid 2000
>
> MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia is likely to extend the life of the
> 12-year-old Mir space station until mid-2000, a
> year later than expected, a government official said Wednesday.

Another, longer story appeared on two sites:

> For Nov. 18, 1998
>
> Report: Mir likely to stay in orbit an extra year
>
> MOSCOW - Russia is likely to extend the life of its 12-year-old Mir
> space station until mid-2000, a year later than expected, a source
> close to the Kremlin told Reuters on Wednesday.

Now, at first I was just going to put the URLs, and then I began to
wonder how many SeeSat subscribers do not have Web access and thus
find URLs by themselves to be totally useless.... (Please don't
swamp me with replies!)

The Leonids were great from about 160 km west of Austin! (Near the end
of the meteor observing time, several satellites tried to distract us,
including a very brightly flashing Iridium 14.)
