One reason for this could be the observing time. Geosyncs change in
brightness which depends on the sun-observer-satellite angle (the
Astras do so).
On the two pictures of the Astra cluster (Bruno mentioned them),
taken a few weeks ago you can see this effect. The second picture =
shows about one quarter of the ellipse these Astras perform within
one sideral day (exposure time 6 hours).
It also shows the extreme variation in brightness during these 6
hours.
