This is also the first time that I've observed Explorer 7
[00022/59009A], which so far is the oldest object I've detected. Past
attempts to detect Vanguard 1 [00005/58002B] have been unsuccessful.

After the first launch attempt resulted in a nationally televised explosion,
technicians welded several St. Christopher medals to the guidance section
and launched Vanguard 1 successfully on St. Patrick's Day 1958. Too late to
make the record books, though. The Army's Redstone rocket had lifted
Explorer 1 into orbit two months earlier.
