Hi!Following my post yesterday Arnold Barmettler pointed me to CalSky which IDd my flares as Cosmo Skymed 3 and Sich 1M Rocket.
The former observation was even more serendipitous than I first thought since it confirms the flare prediction for Cosmo Skymed 3 from the SAT-Flare Tracker website (curiously it was a NOSS prediction from the same site that had prompted me to go out observing at that time).
I hadn't used CalSky before and it's certainly a great resource for planning a night's casual observing or,as here, IDing a chance sighting. In terms of positional data for planned observations though, Heavens-Above is still extremely useful.
     All best wishes,
                   Marcus Clark
