    John , as regards books might i suggest the Dover publication 
    fundamentals of astrodynamics,
    by Bates Mueller & White published in 1971. If you have access to a 
    university or college
    library  "Methods of orbit determination" and "Methods of 
    Astrodynamics by PR Escobal would
    be useful.
