Thanks to Andrew Yee for posting this National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) press release to the newsgroup: "Satellites Spanning the Sky: Solar Scientist Photographs Distant Commercial Satellites with Basic Camera Equipment". The article begins, "Using an off-the-shelf camera set for a long exposure and satellite data freely available on the Internet, solar scientist Bill Livingston has developed a dependable method for taking pictures of commercial communications satellites hovering high above Earth." The press release and links to photos can be found at this location: http://www.noao.edu/outreach/press/pr01/pr0106.html The photo was taken on January 3, but I can't find a specific time. They are mostly geostationary satellites, but there are two unidentified crossers, and one of them is described in the smaller section photo as a "tumbler".
