Decay Possibilities???

Several friends in the Charleston SC observed a VERY bright object enter 
the atmosphere at 19:45 local time 3/15/97 (00:45 UTC 3/16/95) They said 
it was white and red lasting for several seconds to the northwest. One 
fellow said he was looking the other direction and his daughter said she 
saw something, so he turned and observed it as well. Any possiblities 
that it was a decay?
