icbm spirals

    The spiral in the sky phenomenon is quite striking.  I've seen many photos 
    and videos of it from I think Finland?   Norway?  I forget.  Like you 
    guessed it is basically a serious failure where the thrust isn't axial - 
    isn't symmetric. For example if only one engine was working or if half the 
    exhaust cone ripped off.
    
    The result is a rocket spinning in a fast circle with exhaust spreading out 
    in a spiral at the same time as the object orbits (or coasts) overhead.  If 
    this happens soon after sunset it can be lit up by the sun and spectactular.

    There have been news reports of a Russian ICBM test over the middle east.
    Is this a usual launch direction for this kind of test? In one of the videos
    it  shows a comet like object which suddenly swirls like a whirlpool. I
    have never  seen a launch trail like that. What would cause that? A
    catastrophic  failure?
