Hello! Mark Harris wrote: > Any particular reason why Iridiums 1 and 78 were never > launched? I've made a Google search and found only one post dated by 1997/05/12 which lists IRIDIUM 1 (97020A, ID 24792) along with Iridium 2, 3, 4 and 5 (97020B, C, D and E, respectively). So Iridium 1 WAS launched back in 1997, but now this ID refers to Iridium 8. As to Iridium 78, check out this list's archives for December 1998, namely http://www2.satellite.eu.org/seesat/Dec-1998/0142.html - there's one satellite marked as Iridium 3 (78) 25431 98048A (98048B stands for Iridium 76). So looks like Iridium 78 has been renamed to Iridium 3. Hope somebody will explain in more details what happened to "original" Iridium 1 and 3.
