Also, low-inclination objects can be considerably fainter from our
latitudes,
even if they are visible.
OTOH I hardly see the need for a personal file (or extraction list) for
BRIGHT satellites - most prediction programs allow you to set the magnitude
limit, including HeavensAbove (edit "&Mag=4.5" in the "Daily pred..." URL)
and with QuickSat, or a 486DX-Pentium class PC, most programs handle a
large TLE file in reasonable time. Programs use a file of magnitudes,
like QuickSat's quicksat.mag, SkyMap's satmag.dat, or the info on line 1
in mccants.tle etc.
SkyMap allows you to select also on maximum AND minimum range, maximum
perigee and elevation (in addition to culmination elevation, magnitude,
time period, lighting)
QuickSat does not need extraction lists - it is fast, and to limit your
output you can assign letters to the 'Flag character' in quicksat.mag
depending on your Special Interest Groups, inclination, satellite class
or purpose.... and select up to five of these for each prediction run.
You can chain ("combine") several runs into one, thus select more than
five groups.
I have used extraction lists when I travel South - to avoid wasting
time on satellites that can be seen from home.
I make one run for objects visible from my temporary location, and one
QuickSat run for two-three months (!) for the home latitude.
Then I use my favourite text editor (UltraEdit) to extract only the
column with USSPACECOM numbers, sort it while removing duplicates
(and afterwards the text lines) from each run, then its DIFF
function to get only the objects that are NOT visible from home.
I use my APPLYSEL to extract elsets. BUILDSEL can create, or append
to, the selection files needed for APPLYSEL.
