Finally a subject that I can speak to!

Amateur radio operators have launched quite a few satellites over the years, and there are a good number in orbit right now. A tutorial exists on how to 'work' your first satellite: http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/information/faqs/langdon.php

    There are FAQ's here: http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/information/faqs/

Essentially our sats have transponders that operate across different bands - for instance you transmit on 2m (144 MHz) and your repeated audio will appear in the 70cm (440 MHz) band. There are also digital-only satellites that act as store-and-forward.

I would suggest to your friend that he attempt one of the low earth orbit FM birds before advancing to the SSB birds. He can contact me via email if he'd like more info (kay four dee e tee (at) arrl.net)
