If there are at least 7 stars in the picture you might be able to use this website created by a google employee which works amazingly well. With at least 20 stars it almost always works even down to field of view under 1 degree. It doesn't matter if it is image reversed or whatnot. You don't need to know where in the sky the photo was taken and so on. http://nova.astrometry.net/ I used to have a beta test account which might still work but I think the above public interface probably works fine. If you have trouble getting it to work, send a link to the picture in question to seesat.
