I tried a polarizing filter between my eye and the eyepiece when Saturn was near the moon in a blue sky at about 90 degrees (I think it was) from the sun and that helped significantly to increase the contrast. The blue sky gets bluer by the greatest amount 90 degrees from the sun. That also happens to be where the sky looks bluest. The bluer the sky, the better the polarizer works.
