Are the magnitude data from the > IOD-formatted reports used for standard magnitude > determination ? Or is their a prefered format for doing so. George Lewis, who developed the IOD format, confirmed off-list that it supports reporting magnitude without positional data. As a result, Ed Light has adopted that format, and has posted a couple of reports in recent days. My software for determining standard magnitude reads all three of the standard reporting formats: IOD, UK, and Russell Eberst's form of the latter. As written, it requires positional data; however, I will modify it to accept magnitude-only IOD data. I recommend that magnitude-only observers adopt the IOD format. I do not know whether or not it is considered permissible to omit positions from the other formats. If so, then I would recommend them also for magnitude-only reports.
