Various list members might be interested to know that
Gordon Garradd of Loomberah NSW imaged Contour near its
current apogee. It was magnitude 16 at the time according
to the software package he uses to reduce his data. The
observations were passed on to JPL. He was of course using
his 50cm newtonian and a very good CCD chip.
Gordon currently holds the record for observing a spacecraft
by optical means. The Controllers of NEAR arranged its solar
panels to glint the Sun towards Earth when it was 33 million KM
    away.
