I can't test this here at the office (no ME) but, don't give up until
you've tried ANSI.COM, a PC Magazine utility.  It's tiny (4k) and may do
the job.  Just run it before the DOS program (Skymap, etc.) that uses ANSI
sequences in a batch file or manually from a dos window. 

I use it on win98 to simplify things vs. ansi.sys.
