Hello Oliver, This most likely was one of the NOSS trio's you saw. They mostly show a triangualar shape, two in the same line and the third to the side. That why they are called: leader, follower and side-car. They are indeed military sats, used by the americans to monitor ships. They triangular configurations makes it possible to pinpoint the location of the ship.
