Dear SeeSaters
Usually I just send out a bunch of positions without comments. However
there are some interesting things to say about the transits below.
The Sun is now on its way south, so 92-83A (USA 86) is JUST becoming
visible again. I had to climb on a step-ladder to see it at 10 degrees
elevation in the NW. Unless it is deorbited, it will soon be visible
from here (52N) every night until the end of 1999.
95-66A (USA 116) is due to disappear at the end of August, but as apogee
comes round there will be opportunities to see it low in the N in late
September and October.
Of the Keyholes, 96-72A (USA 129) is the most likely to be refired, but
if not will disappear into eclipse late in September. There was a
remarkable transit here last night. Twilight (6 degrees) started here
at 20:48 UT, towards the end of a transit of 96-72A. However I saw from
SkyMap that a few minutes earlier it would pass very close to both
Altair and Deneb. It was easy to find the satellite because both stars
were visible to the naked eye, and in fact it passed only 3' arc from
each one. Two good positions were obtained when it was light enought to
record them without using a torch!
Finally, 84-65C has been in twilight for a few weeks, but is becoming
visible again, and will be visible every night from here until early
February 2000.
Sometime soon I'll be looking at the southern hemisphere summer
visibility for the Keyholes.
Best wishes to all
David.
