On January 17, 2003 at 23.29.42 UT with no stars visible because of snow
coming down and with the full moon also not visible at 20 degree elevation,
which is only about 5 degrees above my horizon in that direction, I was able
to see a -6 mag flare thru what must have been a break in the clouds at 039
az 57 el. It had an interesting diffused look seeing it reflecting off the
snow flakes blowing thru the sky. There was no seeing the approach, I had to
know where to look and the duration of visibilty was just a few seconds. I
often go out to see bright ( -4 and better) Iridium flares even though it is
cloudy because they are frequently still visible.
