On the following Web site, there are more than 30 eyewitness
reports of the December 1 re-entry of the Russian Proton rocket
stage over the great plains region of the USA:

     http://earthsky.com/BBS/Observers-Notebook/407x0.html

You have to click on the "12/1/01" date of each item to read that
    person's complete report.

It gives a pretty good feel for how naive observers describe and
interpret such an unusual sky event.

The site's administrator has added a note to each one regarding
what it probably was and includes the URL to the Science@NASA
    Dec. 3 article about it.
