Hi: Correction: I live 104 miles southeast of Vandenberg, not southwest. An important point to remember is that the type of propellant being burned has a great effect on launch visibility. The flame from solid fuel is much brighter than liquid fuel. For example, the Minuteman III is actually a fairly small missile (about as tall as two utility poles), but its solid fuel burns very bightly and the corresponding flame is quite bright. From a distance of 110 miles, a nighttime Minuteman III can create a faint orange glow on my western horizon before it appears from behind some distant mountains. Not bad for a small missile.
