I am actually subscribed to both. The L version provides me with messages=
in 'real time', and these messages are deleted after I have read them.
However, I archive the D version in case I want to look up something late=
r.
This is much more expedient than keeping the invidual messages with all
their overhead.

Probably it has a few more more (...@aol.com, ...@compuserve.com).

In my experience it is at least equally due to the limited command of
English in the romance-language countries of Europe.
Much more could be said about the underlying reasons for this situation,
but this would be way off-topic.
