I spent the first 3 days of the new year travelling
in Sicily (without checking the e-mail).
Yesterday afternoon I was in Palermo (+38.15N,
13,33E) and I decided to run Iridflar on may portable
computer in order to look for Iridium flares. I got
the following prediction:
Iridium 27, date 1-3-98, time 17h11m56s (UT), Az
43.6, El 59.6, Mag -6.9.
Ten minutes before, I stopped my car just aside
"Villa Giulia", an ancient park described by W:Goethe
in his book::"Italianische Reise". The sky was a
little bit cloudy, with a few visible stars..Thanks
to Venus, Jupiter and Saturn I oriented myself toward
NE.
Surprisingly,at 17h 12m (UT), instead of the expected
single monster flare, I saw a sequence of four -2,-3
very short flashes.
Today I'm in Messina and checking the e-mail I find
the answer to my "why?".. Iridium 27 strobes !
Is this a recent anomaly ? Which was the previous
behaviour of the satellite ?
A happy new year, Franco.
