    I saw a related pic at the ksc.nasa.gov site, looking at the archive area, and
    in the pic some astronauts had used a mirror to view...not sure if the same
    technique was used in what you describe...I think the discharges could be
    ionization in the plasma trail...but I do not know for sure...tonyp
