My brother had some involvement with the former NTSB in crash investigations
and one thing they did was take various parts up to various altitudes to
determine terminal velocities so they could determine how to search for
them. In the case of engine compressor blade parts they were looking for (in
Nebraska I think) found that they need to look 6 ft underground. Finding
denser Shuttle parts is going to be difficult.
