I have seen two shuttle reentries. One was after astronomical twilight, one
was after civil twilight. I never saw any puffs, irregularities in the
ionization trail, or brightening of the shuttle. I saw both of these from
Beaumont, Texas, so that is about 100 miles closer to the landing site than
Houston is.
My impression was that of an ordinary commercial plane with a large
contrail, except everything was very, very bright and red/gold. I could
see the wings and the nose clearly. They appeared to be white. The aft
portion was pretty much obliterated by the bright glow.
