I spoke with NASA flight operations about this late last year.  This was 
their response...If something were to happen during re-entry, they must rely 
only on their infrared cameras.  During a day landing, they can use both the 
infrared and the visual tracking systems.  Also, in the case of a 
catastrophic event, recovery efforts could be hampered by the dark night sky.
