I have cheated with respect to making things 'work'. Hardware is fairly
inexpensive if you wish to run XP. I purchased both a desktop and laptop
today for my children for about $250 - each came with XP licenses.

I reinstalled both of the machines with W7 because for the most part, I can
get things to work natively or with a couple of tweaks in 'compatibility'
    mode.

For the programs that I just cannot get to work under W7 - I virtualize an
    instance of the needed OS.

XP is going away. Right now Microsoft support is *ALMOST* non existent for
    the OS. We must adapt.

The answer is to ask the developers to make the tools available for the
current Operating Systems. It isn't going to happen in many cases so you
either have to stay on XP (or whatever platform running) or adapt. My
adaption was to make some Virtual Machines specific for the tools. It is a
pain in the rear - but it works.

There are many free solutions to create virtual machines for almost any
operating system. They are pretty easy to configure too, and as long as
you own the the OS you would be installing, you would be legal too.

Feel free to contact me offline if you have any specific questions on
    virtualization.
