Viewed the launch from my flight back up to Chicago (36,000 FT~, 220NM
N-NW of KSC). The pilot made a right turn so people on my side of the
plane could view the launch, and announced when the launch had
occured. Shuttle was between mag -1 and mag -3 all the way to MECO.
Detail was fairly clear with binoculars (though window, of course).
