They used to also issue NOTMAR's which are "Notice to Mariners". Don't know
that they are still used.

Both systems provide important general info on naigation and safety. NOTAM's
are used to alert pilots that runways are closed or navaids are out of
service etc. Both are used to alert the public about military gun shoots or
missle shoots in offshore or land based military oparea's (W-XXX etc).
