    Anatoly Zak confirms this: "The design of the Ekspress-MD series was largely borrowed from the KazSat project, which
    enables this relatively small satellite to double as an adapter between the Proton's upper stage below and another
    payload mounted above." See also the photo of the Telkom-3 satellite is being installed on top of the
    Briz-M/Ekspress-MD2 stack, without the typical dual payload canister adaptor:
